Selecting and Ranking Australian Universities
Structural rankings for Australian universities are based on the following parameters:

    1.      Total number of academic/research staff
The learning and research performance of universities is almost linearly related to the
total number of academic and research staff.

    2.        Total value of non-current assets
The learning and research performance of universities is almost linearly related to the
total value of non-current assets - that is, resources.

    3.        Student:Staff Ratios
The learning and research performance of universities is inversely related to the student:
staff ratio - the less students that universities have per staff member, the greater the
    depth of knowledge.

    4.        Specialisation
The learning and research performance of universities in Australia is inversely releated to
their specialisation - this is because many universities that claim to be specialised are
    simply small universities.

Each university is given a score for the parameters above:

0 - The University is a poor performer nationally
1 - The University performs at a national level only
2 - The University has international potential
In order to select a university for study in Australia, students need to look at two sets of rankings:
Learning and Research performance rankings of Australian universities are based on a number of
elements:

1.        International Rankings (e.g., Jiao Tong)

2.        Federal Government Performance Data (DEST/DEEWR)

3.        Entry Scores

4.        Learning and Teaching Student Evaluation Data

5.        Surveys

The data presented on this site was extracted from the Melbourne Institute Study (2006) conducted by
Williams and Van Dyke, and reflects the average performance of each university in each of the
disciplines in which it claims to be active.
