Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools are designed to provide high
precision positioning of end-effectors such as, in this case, grinding wheels.
Movements need to be smooth and tolerances are in the micron and sub-micron
levels.  Key to this is the operation of the servo motor drive systems in the machines.

In this research program, undertaken in collaboration with ANCA, the objective was to
improve the performance (particularly in terms of smoothness) of the CNC machine
movements during axis reversal.  This is a complex task from a control systems
perspective.  The research program was undertaken by Manoj Pendharkar as part of
his Doctoral research.
