| Engineering design is critical to the development of all modern consumer and commercial products. Although many thousands of man-years have been expended in documenting and researching the process of design, there are still many unresolved issues. Fundamental to these is understanding the relationship between certainty/uncertainty with which decisions are made. In this Doctoral research program, a new way of looking at engineering design and linking it to responsibility, certainty/uncertainty and project management, is being developed by Tim Waterman. The finished product will be a model that can be used by engineering designers in assessing the quality of the decisions that they make, and a tool that relates to the way in which they manage the design process and assess certainty and the quality of decisions. |
